converting .avi to .mpg!?


i cannot watch .avi-movies and am looking for a program that is able to convert .avi to .mpg. what shall i use?
=> i could try downloading a vlc-player, too, a friend recommended. but look at the list what is needed: http://rpmseek.com/rpm/vlc-0.7.0-0.p...:1105623:0:0:0 i am not unemployed or bored...

Hey..
try aviplay, then you don't have to convert anything.
or
avi to mpg
type:
mencoder -oac copy -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4 -o outputfilename.mpg inputfilename.avi
someone told me that tip.... man mencoder to clue you in on what the options are...you may not need some of them...

the "mencoder"-line did not work, unfortunately. but i'll try to find and download aviplay, thank you!

ungua, with a camera that does not work with linux, which produces videos that cannot be seen with scratch-linux...

of course, aviplay doesn't work either, like almost everything i try under linux... i am quite sure about going back to windows now, i am simply pissed of...

um, when i have that problem my dad told me to use this player software that is a DVD-Rom Drive but it has POWER DVD its a real good player, but you don't necessarily need a DVD ROM drive

To convert avi to mpg, try using tovid - found here: http://tovid.sourceforge.net/
If you have troubles getting it going, post back.

But you should be able to watch avi's. Have you tried MPlayer?

@tw, thank you for the link! i am trying it now. i have that feeling quite often - since about nothing works like it is supposed to be. but it is not only linux' fault, a few cases have their roots in me having to few time to get into different issues. but i'm trying...
