I have a question about Xine, and I wanted to know if anyone has had any success getting it to play Quicktime .mov files. On the Xine documentation page, it says it's possible by using the following method:
Quote:
Possibly the most convenient way to get the Quicktime DLLs is to download them from the MPlayer website http://www.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/dload.html . The package is called "essential". Unpack it and move everything you find inside to /usr/lib/win32 (actually you can place them anywhere you want, e.g. someplace in your home directory, but then you'll have to set decoder.external.win32_codecs_path in your xine config file accordingly). Restart xine then and you should be able to watch Quicktime trailers.
Now I have downloaded the "essential" mplayer codec pkg, but does anyone know how to "set decoder.external.win32_codecs_path in your xine config file accordingly"?
shouldn't have to, just move the codecs to /usr/lib/win32 ( you'll probably have to create the directory) - note that you do not want to move the essential directory and all to /usr/lib/win32, just the codecs inside of it. xine and any xine based player will be able to use the new codecs.
I did that, actually there already was a /usr/lib/win32 directory, and after unpacking the files, I moved all the contents to this directory, but I didn't have time to test. I will have to do this when I get home tonight.
I know this is probably out of scope for the thread, but on a similar note, is there any way to get Firefox to play these files with clicking on a link that is linked to a .mov file that you are anyone knows?
this will vary from person to person, as some people swear by the xine plugins and some swear by the mplayer plug-in. ( this is an opinion) the gxine plugin IMO offers better control than the others. if you have gxine installed, look in /usr/lib/gxine ( or wherever the prefix of gxine is) for gxineplugin.so, either symlink or copy that lib into your $HOME/.mozilla/plugins directory and your good. the other plugins work the same ( put the .so plugin lib in the above directory). Also forgot to add the realplayer plugin, never used it but I heard it works ok.
I thought I posted a reply, but for some reason, it didn't quite make it to the board. I downloaded/installed gxine using slapt-get, which went fine. I then made the symlink and restarted Firefox and went a website that had a .mov file that I wanted to see if I could view, but unfortunately, this is the error I get:
Quote:
xine engine failed to start
No demuxer found - stream format not recognized
Should I make another symlink to the /usr/lib/win32 directory to make sure gxine is seeing all the necessary codecs?
what do you have in /usr/lib/win32 ( just a sample, you don't have to display the entire contents). once you put the codecs in /usr/lib/win32, any xine based player should use them automagically.
