How to build a new kernel?

I am using Mepis 3.3.1 and would like to upgrade my kernel (2.6.10) to 2.6.15. I have downloaded the linux-source. My problem is that when I issue a command "make" , I get the error, "segmentation fault". Why is this happening? I just want to use VMWare server for Mepis and everything isn't working right. I have successfully installed VMWare on Ubuntu. Some sites told me that I should upgrade the kernel and everything. But its just not working! Please help.....

Do you get this error immidiately or after some time of compiling? Any errors before that?

Could be a corrupted compiler-binary - re-install the compiler,
or a hardware-issue ( to much heat / bad RAM ...)

Is your system working flawlessly otherwise?

Yup. I do have gcc..Versions 4 and 3.3...I also tried reinstalling gcc and make but still not successful..I got the segmenation fault message after some time. It works fine for a couple of minutes and suddenly stopped...There's also a message saying internal compiler error or something. I don't get it...Do you have idea how to fix it? Or at least give me some help on how I can install VMWare...I really need it badly..All the How-tos stated that I should upgrade my kernel from 2.6.10 to 2.6.15...Thanks.
