Question Unable to build NVIDIA kernel module / determin kernel version

I'm trying to install the driver for NVIDIA GeForce Go 5200 on my Dell Inspiron 8600 Laptop.
When executing the installer I keep getting the Error message: Unable to bild the NVIDIA kernel module. The last lines of the log file are:

Code:
-> building kernel module:
   executing: 'cd ./usr/src/nv; make module SYSSRC=/usr/src/linux-2.6.5-1.258' ...
   Unable to determine kernel version.
   make: *** [select_makefile] Fehler 1
-> Error
ERROR: Unable to build the NVIDIA kernel module.
The README didn't help me. I couldn't find anything regarding this problem searching the internet or this forum. I'm new to Linux, so the solution might be something simple.
The kernel source code is installed and seems to be found correctly by the installer.

What might be causing this problem?

Thanks for your help,
Night Ink

Are you using a precompiled kernel from a vendor or one compiled yourself? I'm pretty sure it can't find your kernel version because your kernel's nonstandard or only partially compiled... but I'm not sure (I'm somewhat of a newbie myself). My ATI drivers don't work with some precompiled kernels.

I'm using the precompiled Fedora Core 2 kernel (newly installed, no changes made). So the kernel should be compiled correctly. I didn't change the source code either.
