Question Help ! How to launch/install Java on a dedicated server under Linux

Hello,

I have a Linux account on a dedicated server running under Linux. I can access to the SSH command-line.
I'd like to run a Java application (a single .class file), but when I type "java javaTest.class", it saids me that java is an unknown command, so I think this means that Java is not installed ?
Do you know how to install Sun Java on this server ? Can a non-root user do this, or do I have to ask to the root ?
I'm newbie in Linux, and my domain is web-design and programming

Thank you !
Olivier (excuse my bad english ^^)

What distro is this? Check to see if there is anything under "/usr/java/...". It is best if you install it as root; as then you can install it into a standard system location and stuff.

You can download Sun's Java from here. Go to either JDK or JRE, accept the license agreement, and get the Linux .bin file. You can install as non-root if you install it to somewhere in your home directory; it will take a lot of space, so be careful if you have a quota.

Hello,

Thank you very much for your (quick !) answer
The distro name is : Red Hat Linux release 7.2 (Enigma)
There is not /usr/java/ directory.
So I'll try to install Java in my home directory, because my "administrator" (a friend) is quite busy, and ... is almost more a newbie than me

Thank you again,
Olivier

Hello,

I successfully got and installed JRE, thank you for your precious help
I still have a problem : when I try to load java, I always get an error :

bash-2.05$ ./java ../../javaTest -classpath ../lib/rt.jar
Error occurred during initialization of VM
java/lang/NoClassDefFoundError: java/lang/Object

Maybe a problem of classpath ?

Olivier
