Getting X Server to work across two boxes

I have two boxes set up using SUSE 9.2 professional. When I connect to either one and try to use "kvim", I get the following response: "unable to open display". I have put "xhost +" in the "/etc/profile.local" file on both boxes, I have disabled the firewall but I still have the same problem. I also make sure that the "DISPLAY" environment is set up with the IP address.

I never had this problem before, and I have run out of things to try. Any ideas?

Thanks
Vin

I not that sure, but if you want to do it through ssh, you do ssh -Xipadress programname

are you trying to run kvim localy or from the other system? if you are trying to run it localy and have KDE up and running, then i have no clue, but if you are local and do not already have KDE up and running, then i doubt you will be able to get kvim running. just use vim in a console.

if you are trying to run it remote (from the other system), then the above will do it for you:

ssh -X user@IP program

or you can leave the program blank and you will get a command prompt for that other system, then you can run as many GUI based apps you wish.

Getting X Server to Work

Thanks for your replies. However, I don't think I wrote my problem correctly. I can get kvim to work on a remote machine or on my machine. The problem is when I log into a remote machine and I want to run kvim on the remote machine but have it display on my monitor.

When I was using Red Hat I had no problem but with SUSE 9.2. I can't seem to figure out how to make it work. With Red Hat all I had to do was run "xhost +" on my box and then when I logged into a remote machine, all I had to do was export the DISPLAY (i.e. export DISPLAY=<IP. ADDRESS:0.0>. Then when I ran kvim or whatever graphyical program on the remote box, I could have show on my display.

When I do that now, all I get is "Cannot connect to X Server".

Cheers,
Vin

X Server

Well, I tried what you both suggested and it worked, then I slapped myself for being so stupid for waiting so long to try it.

Thanks for your help, this problem has been bugging me now for over week.

Have a great weekend,
Vin
