gaim jabber file transfer problems

I have gaim 1.5.0 on linux , the other has gaim 1.5.0 for windows, at both ends files cannot be sent, no dialogue box appears to recieve the file. I thought it was to do with my firewall so i disabled iptables, but that did nothing.
I can send through msn, but its mightly slow as it sends through the msn servers not direct, so i thought as jabber is a open protocol i would have no problems sending files directly between both users, but so far i cannot even recieve the file on either end.

should i use a different jabber client on both ends, as there seems to be a flow of them around the web that are multi-platform.

i never bothered to look into which ports needed to be forwarded, but most routers have a web interface you can set up port forwards... most of the time it is on the `advanced` tab. if you are using DHCP i would suggest changeing to a static IP in the subnet but outside of the DHCP pool.
