Question gaim for hotmail

Hi
I am having a problem with gaim, hope you can help me.
I did the following steps to login to hotmail via gaim messenger;
1- launch "gaim" and click on pluggins
2- click on "load" and add "libmsn.so"
3- click on "Accounts" and then click on "Add"
4- In the screenname I write "usamahashimi" (as usamahashimi@hotmail.com is my email address of hotmail)
5- Then I enter "Password" and in "Alias" I write "usama"
6- Then from "Protocol" I choose "MSN". The "Server"it is using was "messenger.hotmail.com" and the "Port" it is using was 1863.
7- Then I click OK. Then I choose my name from Accounts and Click on Sign On but the following error appears;
usamahashimi@hotmail.com was unable to sign on: Protocol not supported
My Gaim version is 0.59.8 and I am using RedHat Linux9
Can anyone tell me whats wrong.
Thanks.

0.59 is pretty old - they have 1.0 now. upgrade to the newest one and try again.

Microsoft likes to change the encryption on their msn messanger network to be a pita from time to time

I had this issue, but its been like a year, so i dont remember the details.

if you search around, you will find that you need to download some libraries and hack it a bit to get it to work... i seem to remember needing ssl libs. a google serch should point you in the right direction
Redhat putting things in places game didnt expect was part of the problem.

When you do get it working, you will need to put in your full email address, not just the first part of it. msn allows email addresses from many domains to be used, so if you didnt use the full address as your login, they woudnt know if you were joe@asdf.com or joe@ms.com

Before you do anything, go to gaims website, at http://gaim.sourceforge.net/ and get the latest version, by now they might have made it work without quite as much hacking.

Installing it on slackware is much easier, it just worked, or I could put togeather a step by step for you :/

Every time Yahoo and Microsoft change their protocols, GAIM, Jabber, et al update their programs. Go get the latest version - not only will it work, but you get access to the new features.
