EDIT: Mega-whoops! I copied to the directory above "plugins" and never noticed in all this time! Now copied correctly, plugin is detected, and flash plays on YouTube.

Sorry to put 2 issues in 1 post, but I only need to fix 1 issue to solve my problem (playing YouTube videos in Firefox on Linux).

1. I installed the Adobe Flash plugin (for Linux) following Adobe's instructions (download, decompress, and copy the correct ".so" to the plugins directory).
   
   However, the plugin is not detected by either YouTube or Firefox (checked using "aboutlugins"). Something must be wrong with Adobe's plugin version 10.x!
   
   
2. I want to try a Firefox extension called "Download YouTube Videos as MP4 and FLV," which rewrites the YouTube pages to include a download button which allows you to directly download the video in MP4. However, it requires VLC media player on Linux.
   
   I have Slackware, and followed the instructions on this page (http://wiki.videolan.org/Slackware ) to use the SlackBuild from AlienBob. I set REQUIRE_YASM=NO. However, the build produces the errors below (it tries to build with yasm, and it doesn't find "libvpx.a"):

Hmmm... what path did you place libflashplayer.so? For Firefox I normally place it within /usr/lib/firefox/plugins/ if it is integrated into my system (could also be /usr/lib/firefox-3.x/plugins). Or into the firefox plugins directory when I extract the latest version to /opt/. I don't use slackware so maybe another user will be more accurate.

Are you using a 32 or 64 bit build OS (32/64 firefox?)?

Does firefox give error output when launched from the terminal about libflashplayer.so? If so please post the output.

I usually get the .tar.gz version for Linux when it comes to flash. I'm kind of a LFS DIY kinda guy though.

Do you have any extensions installed? What plugins are already available to your firefox (Run about: plugins in URL bar)? Do those plugins coincide with what *.so files within the /usr/lib/firefox/plugins dir (if not then we're probably looking in the wrong place for the plugins dir)?

If flash shows up in your about: plugins (with no space in between them) then an extension may be interfering with your flash.

According to man firefox you can run "firefox -safe-mode" and it will display more debugging information and disable all plugins. Then go to youtube and see what happens to the error output in the terminal.

I have the libflashplayer.so in /usr/lib/flash-plugin and there is also a symlink to it in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

Put libflashplayer.so in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins, this makes it available for all browsers.

As stated before, it doesn't show up with "aboutlugins").
I will try safe mode and see what it tells me.

FYI (off-topic), in the meantime I disabled the plugin mentioned in the first post because I found another to try. (Found it on accident when I was looking for an extension no longer available that would save a list of your plugins on the website which you can use to all plugins together later in one step.) It's called TweakTube. It basically packages a bunch of other plugins/scripts together. It rewrites the YouTube page to add a bunch of buttons that allow you to download videos, among other things. You can convert/download flash as mp3 for example. It works for audio with mp3...unfortunately with mp4 (for video) the playback on my system is silent. There was an option to convert using a website, too, but that just didn't work. Pretty cool extension, though...it's nice to search Google and have 20 pages of results consolidated to 1 page...plus mouse over images and see information from the page where they are hosted! Really cool!

Well, anyway, I'll try some of the suggestions here.
