Flash / Java Plugins in Firefox 2.0 under Ubuntu (Dapper)

I know the question pops up a lot, but my situation seems to be unique . I'm using the new Firefox 2.0 and Ubuntu Dapper Drake.

This is what I have tried...

- When I first visited a site that had flash and java, Firefox told me I needed plugins. Like a true fool, I clicked on the 'Install Missing Plugins' button. It failed.
- I tried installing the plugins with Easy Ubuntu. Failed.
- I tried downloading the plugins and copying the files into the right directories in the terminal. Failed.
- I tried the shell script for installing that came with the Flash plugin. Failed.
- I tried Automatix. It told me it succeeded... but still nothing under 'about: plugins' and I can't see flash or java.
- I tried removing all traces of flash and java from my /usr/lib/firefox directory via the terminal and uninstalling them through Automatix, then re-installing them through Automatix... still no luck.

Does anyone have any idea what I am doing wrong?

Not for sure. I could do some guessing, but that wouldn't be very productive.

I have both plugins in FF 2 installed and working. I went to Sun and downloaded java ( not the rpm ) but the version for 'other distros'. That is a bin zipped file. Basically I unzipped it, and decompressed the archive where I wanted it installed. I had to make a sim link to the java installation. The step by step instructions are on Sun's site along with the download. Sun has a test location on their site, once installed you can confirm it works.

As I remember, flash was about the same process.

I install FF on Mandriva, and Xubuntu by downloading the archive and decompressing and unbundling the archive version. Just follow their instructions.

Post back if you need more guidance, with specific questions.

Get the flash 9 beta, untar it, and copy the libflashplayer.so file to you ~/.mozilla/plugins directory.

The beta is available from: http://www.adobe.com/go/fp9_update_b...er_linuxplugin

The first question to consider is this:

Are you running 32 bit or 64 bit system?

amd64 for instance is a 64 bit version!

Sadly there is no immediate solution for flash and javascript on 64 bit firefox.

I'm also running Ubuntu 6.06 with firefox 2.0.

From your post I'm assuming that one you are able to install the plugin and end up with the file

/usr/lib/firefox/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so

I found that firefox wanted this file it in

~/.mozilla/plugins/

Once I did this the plugin started working:

Code:
cd ~/.mozilla/plugins/
ln -s /usr/lib/firefox/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so
