Java plugins not registering with firefox 1.5 and etc.

I have posted to this forum several times with the same problem several times and have incorporated the help from others but I still have no fix for my problem.

www.cnn.com will not show certain parts of news articles because it says I do not have a Java plugin.

www.cnn.com will not play videos because I do not have the Windows Media player. I prefer to use Kaffeine if possible.

What am I doing wrong with Mandriva 2006 and KDE 3.4 that this doesn't work ? Opera will not play the videos either.

below are my files;

/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so
and
/home/scott/Download/firefox/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so

Property/Permissions tab indicates that the above files are links with "root" as the user and group

The Java files:
/usr/java/jre1.5.0_01
and
/usr/java/jre1.4.2_09
and
/usr/java/j2re1.4.2_09

Installed plug-ins

The above looks right for javascrip however, there is no need that I know of to link the libjavaplugin_oji.so file both system wide and in the home dir. I would remove the one in home. Also how did you link them? I've had a problem before finding the correct link type, in the end I logged into KDE as root and draged a link, this worked for me, but as we all know logging in as root is bad. other than that may be your users have not got permissions on the links.

It probably does not help if I say it worked first time when I did this. Can you confirm:

You have Firefox 1.5 downloaded and unpacked somewhere. In my case I put it in /usr/local/firefox/

After running the Sun Java binary downloaded from www.java.com you made the link between the /plugin/ directory of your new firefox installation and /usr/java/jre1.5.0_01/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so

Per java site move into the firefox 1.5 plugin directory and type:
ln -s /usr/java/jre1.5.0_01/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so

You have then gone into edit>preferences>general in firefox 1.5 and ensured the java is enabled (it was by default on mine.)

Also did you try testing the installation on the java site rather than cnn?

and it still does not work?

Thanks for the response,
I have Mozilla at /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox-1.5

I have used the command line ln -s to link the files, console says "file exists"

From the Edit/Preferences/ menu I have an "x" in the enable Java Box

Not sure how to "test" on the Java site ???

Thanks,
Scott Nash

Cara25 - It sounds to me like you have linked the file incorrectly, normally when you use a command like ln, seeing no message and just a new prompt mean it has executed correctly. I would try removing you existing links and tring again. cd or open a console in the /usr/lib/moilla-firefox-1.5/plugins dir and enter the above command for linking given by tur rhird, correcting the path to point to your java insterlation first.

Thanks for the response !,
I deleted the libjavaplugin_oji.so file from the /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins folder and from the console as SU ran the ln command that tur third recommended. I did not get a message back, just a return to a new prompt.

Now how do I "test" at Java.com ?

Just experimenting around,
I went to my
/home/scott/Download/firefox/plugins/ directory and created a link to the libjavaplugin_oji.so file from the console using the ln -s comand as tur third suggested, from the console I got no message and a return to a new prompt. I then went to Java.com and ran the "Verify Installion" applet. This time I got the response back from Java that I have an old version (1.05.01) of the JRE and it's asking me to upgrade to 1.05.07. Evidently the Java site is reading the JRE that I have installed. My problem with the Java JRE is that I never intended to actively use the /home/scott/Download/firefox folder, I thought Mandriva would read the same folder that I have at /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox.

Any suggestions on how I can delete the /home/scott/Download/firefox folder and not lose all my other plugins when I reload firefox to the /usr/lib directory only ?

Thanks,
Scott Nash

Thanks everyone !
I got my Java JRE to register with Firefox 1.5, not a clean way, but it does work.

Thanks to tur third, I linked my /usr/java/jre1.5.0_01/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so file to my /home/scott/Download/firefox/plugins folder by use of the command ln -s in a console window instead of previously "dragging and dropping" the libjavaplugin_oji.so file in Konqueror and choosing to link the file. This works, I have the Java plugin registered in Firefox 1.5 as shown in aboutlugins typed into Firefoxes address bar. The Java.com "Verify Installation" app verified that I had the JRE but it reported an old version, (1.5.0.01).
I really need the Firefox in the /usr/lib/ folder but I screwed up at the very begining of the installation of Mandriva. Any advice on how to move the entire Firefox folder from /home/scott/Downloads to /usr/lib and not mess up all my plugins would be appreciated.
Also still need help getting Firefox 1.5 to launch Kaffeine when I click on a video on www.cnn.com that uses a Windows Media Player to show videos. Any ideas ? pleas look at my plugin list in one of the above messages.
Thanks,
Scott Nash

I'm glad you have java working..

I have not tried getting videos to start in Kaffeine, but I notice there is an add on to Firefox that looks like it might do this, have a look at:

MediaPlayerConnectivity 0.6.3

'Add ons' are very easy to install in Firefox.

Not sure how to move your installation of Firefox without breaking something. Would the 'mv' command do this?

I've had the MediaPlayerConnectivity 0.6.2 "add on" installed for quite some time in Firefox 1.5. I just upgraded it to 0.6.3, haven't tried to see if it corrects my problem with Kaffeine not viewing WMA files.

Thanks,
Scott Nash

BTW,
Any suggestions on a easy to use media player for Mandriva/KDE ? I've tried mplayer and it's controls are unacceptable.
