Firefox - Can't browse while downloading

I have a 256k/64k adsl connection. While I'm downloading something with Firefox, i can't browse sites. They just don't open. Can i prevent Firefox using all bandwith while downloading?

That's very odd. Firefox should know how to share. One thing I'd try is back up my ~/.firefox directory and create a fresh profile to see if that fixes it.
