/etc/sysconfig/apache2 file and modules On SuSE

First, could someone kindly tell me what the main difference(s) is between config files in the /etc/sysconfig directory and config files in application-specific directories? For example: Apache2's main config file is httpd.conf, but there's also the apache2 config file in the /etc/sysconfig directory.

Second, in my /etc/sysconfig/apache2 file I have edited the value of APACHE_MODULES to include rewrite (I want Apache to use mod_rewrite), but after starting the Apache2 daemon and viewing my /etc/apache2/sysconfig.d/loadmodule.conf file, it hasn't included this module. Isn't editing the APACHE_MODULES value in /etc/sysconfig/apache2 the correct way to include modules?

/etc/sysconfig is apache application behavior. httpd.conf is webspace behavior. Add rewrite to APACHE_CONF_INCLUDE_DIRS=

Just wanted to say a belated thanks for your help, leandean.

I finally figured out that if you use Yast2 to enable (or re-enable) Apache2 for the current run-level, the changes made to /etc/sysconfig/apache2 will then take effect. This makes sense with what you said. Other things are starting to make sense to this now too.

It seems like the /etc/sysconfig/ directory is specific to SuSE?
