display issue

I am trying to run Windowlab.

Here is what happens:

Code:
~$ windowlab
windowlab: can't open display! check your DISPLAY variable.
I have tried this, but still get the same error:

Code:
~$ export DISPLAY=localhost:0.0

You should also allow accesst to your xserver:
Code:
xhost +localhost

Try:
Code:
export DISPLAY=:0.0
xhost +localhost
and if that doesn't work, try for the 2nd command
Code:
xhost +
to see what happens.
If that doesn't work make that sure your xserver is listening to port 6000
Code:
netstat -tan|grep 6000
If it's not listening, then your xserver is started with the "--nolisten tcp" option. Check your xserver startup files to remove it.

When I do "xhost +" in the console, it says "xhost unable to open display ":0.0"", but when I do it in xterm, it works.

and when I do "netstat -tan|grep 6000" in console, it doesn't show anything, but in xterm it shows that it listens. So I try to start windowlab in xterm, but it says "root window unavailable".

I've done a little search and found out that windowlab is a window manager. If you want to use that window manager then you should follow the instructions:
Quote:
To make WindowLab your default window manager, edit ~/.xinitrc (if you start X from the console by typing "startx") or ~/.xsession (if you start with a graphical login manager) and change the last line to "exec windowlab".
