Console chokes

Hi
Playing my music files with
flac -d 'The performers - name of song.flac' -c |aplay
works OK (if any one knows an easy way to play flac files in SuSE please post).
But after several tracks are entered, Konsole (or the console) seems to freeze; the next line after the command shows only >
i.e. no username or directory. Entering a command produces only another >. I can get out of it by ctrl-c, then entering a simple command like ls at the restored prompt works. But trying the same command (by scrolling up) freezes it again.
Even ls 'The performers - name of song.flac' freezes it
although ls "The performers - name of song.flac" does work. Strangely choosing to play a track that did play (by scrolling up) does work. And switching from Konsole to a console does not produce any improvement.
I cant see anything wrong looking at top or jobs in another console.
Any one have any idea what is going on here?

Hmm.. won't work with YAST. Sound is so complicated that I am scared off not using YAST (I know I could just use rpm -i --force). I wonder if a different distro would be easier.. anyone done this in Ubuntu?
