Configuring X

hey - I'm new to the entity that is Linux. when trying to configure my x-windows GUI I managed to end up with a HUGE, virtually unoperable screen full of larger than life fonts/widgets and what-nots. my only thought is that the information entered regarding my monitor/VCard was incorrect when setting up/installing. has anybody else had this??? how can I track down that information (VCard/Monitor) if my monitor has a generic brand name and no history what-so-ever (it's an orphan monitor)

What distro are you using? You can always check out http://www.xfree86.org for more hardware compatiblity and other great stuff for seting up your GUI.

I'm currently using a dist of RedHat i picked up from a friend - not sure of the issue number though. I'll check out that information - Thanks.
