I bought my new computer a few days ago and want to install Mandrake 9 on it.

But i get stuck when it comes to configuring X.

"Choose an X server" comes up, and gives me a load of choices, the default being vesa. I have no idea what it means.

So i choose vesa, then choose my resolution, and this error comes up:

(EE) VESA(0): No matching modes
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

try to change some parameters

is there an operating system already on it?

It's a hp pavillion. The monitor is a 17' hp pavilion mx70.

It came with Windows XP Home. I decided i wanted to dual boot it with Mandrake yesterday. Something went wrong with the install and Windows XP wouldn't boot.

With this computer, Hewlett Packard don't give you recovery disks, they use a recovery partition instead.

So i tried to reinstall Windows from the recovery partition, it didn't work, so thought stuff it and decided to go with an all Linux computer.

So i deleted the Windows partitions, including the recovery partition, the Linux install went well until the configure X bit, and that's where i'm at now.

Now i'm left with my new computer having no OS on it.

And i've tried turning plug n play off.

If you need anymore hardware info then just say.

You could alwyas do a basic install of
the os, and then set-up X from a working
command-line ....

the type of video card is needed. turn the box off and unplug it if you need to open it up to retrieve this info.

It says it's an Integrated S3 ProSavage8 3D AGP graphics
