configuring X

ok here's the deal, i downloaded and installed XFree86 4.1.0 on my box, and run:

# XFree86 -configure 2>test.txt

and get an

Aborted (Core Dumped)

message. as you noticed the output was sent to a text file. i being my newbie self couldn't make heads or tales of what the thing was trying to communicate to me. i'd be happy to send the text file to anyone who would care to view it.

any advice anyone? what can i do to get it working?

mostly we just need to see the last few lines... the errors right before the crash. what version of x were you upgrading from?

first i tried upgrading from 4.0.1, then after that didn't work i just went for clean install.

the last lines of the error:

Symbol fbdevHWGetLineLength from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/fbdev_drv.o is unresolved!
Symbol fbdevHWGetLineLength from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/fbdev_drv.o is unresolved!
Symbol vgaHWCopyReg from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/siliconmotion_drv.o is unresolved!
Symbol vgaHWSetStdFuncs from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/siliconmotion_drv.o is unresolved!
Symbol vgaHWSetStdFuncs from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/siliconmotion_drv.o is unresolved!

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting

When reporting a problem related to a server crash, please send
the full server output, not just the last messages.
This can be found in the log file "/var/log/XFree86.0.log".
Please report problems to xfree86@xfree86.org.

Aborted(core dumped)

there were actually quite a few more "symbol * from module * is unresolved." in retrospect it might just be that "signal 11" that screwed it, not the unsresolved drv.o's. i have no clue.
