cant install VMware
hi, im trying to install VMware Workstation 5.5, im running Ubuntu and managed to figure out that i should download the Tar archive rather than the rpm.
so ive downloaded it. but i cant install it. i went to http://www.vmware.com/support/ws55/d...all_linux.html and tried to follow the instructions on there, but it assumes i know what its talking about.
i typed
Code:
root@homecomputer:/home/caspar# tar zxpf VMware-workstation-5.5.1-19175.tar.gz
and nothing happens
how do i install it please?

Sometimes it helps to read the docs.

ok, i did it properly but it still gets hung up
Code:
Trying to find a suitable vmmon module for your running kernel.
None of the pre-built vmmon modules for VMware Workstation is suitable for your
running kernel. Do you want this program to try to build the vmmon module for
your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)? [yes]
Setup is unable to find the "make" program on your machine. Please make sure itis installed. Do you want to specify the location of this program by hand?
[yes]
What is the location of the "make" program on your machine?
any ideas

VMware has to compile modules for your kernel. To do so, it needs a C compiler (gcc) and a few tools like make. Ubuntu does not install them by default, so you need to apt-get them.
