Question ALSA problem - static noise on playback

Ive just installed alsa 1.0.5 (alsa-drivers, alsa-lib, alsa-utils) and when i try to play music with 'aplay' i just get static noise.

Im using an Intel i810 sound chip on my laptop and followed the instructions that the alsa website took me to for this card (http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc...odule=intel8x0).

I can get playback in xmms if i use the OSS Driver output plugin, but if i use the ALSA output plugin, i get the error:

Code:
ALSA lib pcm.c:1972:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM /dev/dsp

** WARNING **: alsa_setup(): Failed to open pcm device (/dev/dsp): No such file or directory
in the terminal. However, /dev/dsp does exist.

Also, i use Windows in linux through vmware and whenever sound is played here it is very jumpy and seems to play at half speed with gaps inbetween.

Does anyone know how i can resolve these issues?

Thanks.

Ok, just realised that the issue with aplay only occurs when playing mp3, wav works fine. However the problem still remains with the xmms plugin and vmware.

Thanks.
