I installed the 2.6.1 kernel recently(which is what I'm running right now) and I've only been working with Linux for about 3 weeks. A good tip is to type "make install" within the source directory and it will make the mods to your lilo or grub config file and move system.map and the kernel into /boot where they need to be along with setting the init file up which is probably what you're missing.

If you use lilo open the file /etc/lilo.conf and paste the contents here and I'll review it. The problem might be in there and make install didn't set it up correctly or something. I'm not too sure of the workings of Grub, but I think I could figure a problem out with it to if it's what you use. Also, go to the /boot folder and make sure you have a system.map-(kernel version) and initrd-(kernel version).img file. I think that might be where the problem is, but then again it could be somewhere off in the great vastness of things I haven't explored yet.
