What is the deal with iCalendar?

So from what I've read, I can sync my calendar if I use an iCalendar server. I searched around some, but am not totally clear on something. Is an icalendar server nothing more than a webdav server? I run webdav now for syncing my Tomboy notes - can I just add another webdav dir and sync my iCalendar client that way?
If I'm totally off base, please enlighten me.
Thanks in advance!

I don't know if it is exactly a webdav server, but iCal can understand any server that can cough up a .ics file, which webdav can do.
