Two words:

Code:
man tar
man, in his great wisdom, tells me that to view the names of the files on my tape, I should try
Code:
tar -tf /dev/tape
and to extract one of those files to do
Code:
tar -x filename -f /dev/tape
In both of these cases replace /dev/tape with your tape drive and in the second one replace filename with the name of the file you wish to extract.
