erase tape content

I'm trying to erase the content of a scsi tape drive with the command:
$ mt -f /dev/st0 erase
It seems like the erase operation starts on the tape drive but than, the system hangs forever. I'm also not able to kill the process with kill -9 ...
Anyone has seen this problem before?

stops when tabe is full of zeros !
