suggestion for planned samba server setup

Hi everyone,

I am rebuilding my samba server and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or tips for what I am planning to do. The hardware will be as follows:

Motherboard: Asus CUR-DLS
CPU's: Intel PIII 1.0ghz socket 370
Memory: 4 gig Samsung ECC SDRAM
OS hard drive: 8 gig CF memory card mounted on a CF to IDE adapter
Storage: 4 x's Seagate 500 gig IDE
RAID controller: 3Ware 3ware 7410-4 controller, (RAID 5) (64 bit PCI bus)
NIC: 3COM 3C996B-T gigabit NIC, (64 bit PCI bus)

I know the hardware seems a little low end, but it should be more than sufficient for my needs.

I am planning to install CentOS 5.3 on the 8 gig Cf and then create a mount point for the 2 tb RAID as my home directory.

Does this sound good or should I look at other options?

Thanks

zog

I think your hardware is perfect. However, would you consider using SME-Server for your SAMBA server? It's an all in one system, but I find it's excellent, secure out of the box, very convenient for users and groups, email, etc. And you still have the choice to use it 'just' as a SAMBA server.

SME-Server is based on CENTOS, so it has a solid base. Enjoy!

Instead of using all your drivespace as 2 TB I would setup a raid five so you would have only 1.5 tb usuable space. Unless this was already your intentions. Also I have ran a linux machine off a compact flash card and it did really well. It was used for an rfid project so it was constantly utilizing the network card but with samba that may be a little different?

Do post back with your findings. I am very interested in hearing how it runs.
