No console after OS upgrade (Ubuntu 15.10 to 16.04 upgrade), booting UEFI
Hi, all.
Long-time (semi-occasional) reader, first-time poster. Very much veteran Linux user (since 1992).
Has anyone ever run into a situation where you do an OS upgrade of your favorite distribution and you lose the local console display? It will, however, respond to keyboard input, in this case, I needed to reboot. I logged into my machine in the blind and was able to reboot it. I just have no console display. Another thing to bear in mind is that the console worked before.
Here are some details:
Machine:
AMD A4 7300 dual-core APU, 3.1GHz, built-in Radeon graphics
MSI A88X-G43 running in UEFI mode
8GB RAM
60GB SSD, two 750GB 2 1/2" HDDs, one 3TB 3 1/2" HDD
rEFInd boot manager
Ubuntu 16.04.1 ("Xenial Xerus")
I had done a battery of upgrades, starting with 15.04, going through 15.10, then finally to 16.04. The last step was particularly troubling as when the system starts up, the console goes blank shortly thereafter with no way to get it back. However, the computer otherwise works fine. Most of the time, I run it headless anyway, but it'd be nice to have the console. Until I fix it, I just telnet into it from one of my household computers or a Raspberry Pi I have in the garage where the server in question is.
I somehow think it's a GRUB issue, though I'd like some thoughts on this.
Thoughts?
