I have a Mediawiki set up at home, and I would like to enable the email features of it. The obvious problem here is - my ISP is not a big fan of SMTP servers.

I thought the easy solution to this would be to have the wiki use a single Gmail address to send all emails. However, while the Wiki reports it sent the email successfully, nothing ever arrives in the destination address's Inbox.

I was just wondering if anyone else had ever tried doing this, since I'm not having much success. I've used Ethereal/Wireshark to track things to the point that the communication becomes encrypted, so I know the wiki is at least talking to gmail. After that...no idea what the problem is.

Anyone have any experience setting something like this up, or is this a lost cause? The current end goal is for user A on the wiki to be able to send an email to user B. User B would see an email from "SomeStandardGmailAddress@gmail.com", no matter who user A was.

I'm not totally familiar with Mediawiki internals but I'm assuming they probably just send messages via sendmail or another mail command. You shouldn't have any problems sending emails out this way, it's sort of like just sending from a client. I can run:

mail -s "Test" myemail@gmail.com

And receive the message without problems from my home account on my ISP which is RoadRunner.
