Unhappy Error Logging Into Squirrelmail/session.save_path

I installed squirrelmail and get a login screen, but get the following errors:
Warning: session_write_close() [function.session-write-close]: open(/var/lib/php5/sess_871103c1dc899d18e559e6d639b16bec, O_RDWR) failed: Permission denied (13) in /usr/share/squirrelmail/src/redirect.php on line 168

Warning: session_write_close() [function.session-write-close]: Failed to write session data (files). Please verify that the current setting of session.save_path is correct (/var/lib/php5) in /usr/share/squirrelmail/src/redirect.php on line 168

Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /usr/share/squirrelmail/src/redirect.php:168) in /usr/share/squirrelmail/src/redirect.php on line 169

I am also having similar problems getting phpmyadmin to load up (session errors).

How do I fix this? Which php.ini file takes precedence - /etc/php5/cli/php.ini or /etc/php5/apache2/php.ini ?

This is on a Debian Lenny installation.

HELP!!

apache uses /etc/php5/apache2/php.ini, so you can edit this file and use "session.save_path=/tmp", so the user that runs apache can write to it.
