Problem Logging Into SquirrelMail

Hi there –

I have recently set up a server running MailScanner, SpamAssassin, and Clam AntiVirus with Sendmail. Additionally, I have installed the Dovecot IMAP/POP server. I did not make any changes to the /etc/dovecot.conf file, and I was able to start the daemon up without a problem. I ran a netstat –l command, and the server has imap, imaps, pop3, and pop3s listed in LISTEN states.

The problem is as follows: When I try to log into SquirrelMail, I get the following error message:

Error connecting to IMAP server: localhost.
13 : Permission denied

What is causing this error, and what step(s) do I need to take to correct it? Thanks.

There is not a lot to go on here; perhaps you can get a more detailed look at what is happening when you use SquirrelMail to attempt the IMAP access by setting this line in /etc/dovecot.conf
Code:
auth_verbose = yes
This will cause some amount of logging to appear in /var/log/maillog, which may yield some clues. If you need more detail, the nearby line
Code:
auth_debug = yes
will fill up your maillog even faster. And for the ultimate in security violation, there is the further declaration
Code:
auth_debug_passwords = yes
Be sure to uncomment these lines when you want to turn on the relevant logging, and then restart dovecot. (And be sure to disable this stuff when you have solved the problem. Otherwise, your maillog will end up with all sorts of stuff in it that you probably would not want stolen.)
