First off, I am not posting a solution. It is happening to me. Sometime in the past on my Fedora Core 6 box my automount stopped working for my USB port. I have a DVD attached to the USB port and several SD cards. They used to automount. I really believe it stopped after an "UPDATE"(several updates ago!).
Here's the /var/log/message error:

The odd thing to this NUbE is that when I go to /dev/disk/by-id the devices come and go as I plug them in or remove the equipment. BUT they never appear as an option on my "File Browser." I can manually mount them and have a script to do so BUT of course it would be nice to have AUTOMOUNT working again.
I read another post about "Automount problem in Red Hat 7.1/7.2" and one about "Automounting working for everything except CDdrive" They did not assist me in solving my particular issue. I did learn about the /etc/init.d/autofs and the ps -ef commands. They did not help either.
I'm not sure if reading my dmesg will assist but here is the first few lines:
Linux version 2.6.20-1.2962.fc6 (brewbuilder@ls20-bc2-14.build.redhat.com) (gcc version 4.1.1 20070105 (Red Hat 4.1.1-51)) #1 SMP Tue Jun 19 19:27:14 EDT 2007
..................
(the forum limited me so I omitted the bulk of the dmesg)
BUT the USB drives are showing up in dmesg. Could the File Explorer have a fault?
