Linux autofs: can it work without NIS?

I'm new with Linux administration. Does the Linux autofs work without NIS, or is NIS a prerequisite?

Any help would be fully appreciated.

Thank!

autofs is completely independent of NIS or any other filesystem for that matter. You can use autofs to mount local directories, NFS shares and Samba shares.
