Getting Stuff Done on Linux

One thing you hear often about Linux is that there’s no software for it. This is simply not true. There may not be much proprietary software for it, but there is some, and there are plenty of free alternatives to what most offices use every day.

Read story.

Actually, I don't hear that very often. The last comment I heard from the unenlightened was: "Isn't that illegal?" This from a very intelligent 14-year-old. I had made some vague references to free software.

My impression is that--for any given function--there are now MORE choices in OSS than in proprietary. Of course, all of those options are not stellar performers.

My metric: Except in a particular environment where I have no choice, it's now been at least two months since I booted into Windows.

True. I have roughly 15k packages that could be installed. Of the ones that do the same thing as what I already have, many have all the wrong features and lack what I need. But then again, that's where choices play their best. Someone else could easily differ.

18 months for me. I wiped my HDD when I installed Linux, and I still don't regret it.

Cheers

8 hours??? Shame on you!
(just kidding)

I don't blame anyone for using what's necessary to get the job done. Search my LQ posts, you'll see 95% of what I do with my PC. Everything else is done with Open Office, Limewire, and Solitaire.

My biggest beef with MS, aside from the instability and insecurity of Windows, is that I don't need a new PC every 4-6 years to run a new OS full of new bugs just to keep doing the same thing. I call it "forced upgrade" when they discontinue support for an OS that's almost fixed to "encourage" you to switch to a fatter, buggier, incompatible version, and demand a premium price for it.

Cheers
