Why does Rhythmbox freeze after selcting "pause"?

Rhythm Box

* Ctrl space bar pauses but then freezes the player, i.e. hitting Ctrl space bar, or anything else, won't start Rhythmbox again.
* Top line is greyed out and once pause is selected the player freezes. Moving to different tracks only works for a time (maybe because I've used the pause button).

It may help you to know that I mostly use CDs with rhythm sections
recorded as backing, or CD's, with rhythm sections I've made myself
using Band in a Box. Also when I play "conventional" CD's, the player can't find Artists or Genres.

Have you tried running it from a terminal? It's possible that rhythmbox will print an error message to tell you what's going wrong, or at least give you a hint as to what the problem is.

I think it's normal for it not to find Artists/Genres automatically, to memory you had to configure that separately.

It might also help if you told us the version of Rhythmbox you're using, your distro, and how you installed it

Hope this helps,

RhythmBox Problems

Many thanks for the speedy reply. A friend of mine, who is a professional in the computer business and a big Linux fan installed everything, including a PC emulator. He is up to his ears in work so I don't want to bother him at the moment. Unfortunately I can't find the version or distro. Can I go into the Ubantu software centre in the Emulator? If so will that likely supply an error message? Alternatively, I wonder whether to install the latest version of RhythmBox. If so, can you tell me where in Ubantu I can find out how to uninstall the present version?
I've ticked "yes" in the "does it help" box. Let me know if I can do more.
Regards

Ah, your distro is "Ubuntu". Or, I presume so - that's what you mentioned later in your post. To discover your version, go to "System" then click "About Ubuntu"

Yes, you should be able to, but it won't supply an error message. To get the error message, you would have to open a terminal. I haven't used the new unity interface (if you have the latest version of ubuntu) but the icon will be something like this, and it used to be under "Accessories". Alternatively, if my memory serves me, the shortcut is Ctrl+T. From there, you would type "rhythmbox" and press enter. Use Rhythmbox normally, but when you close it (or when it starts to misbehave) look at the terminal, and it may have printed some messages telling you what is going wrong. You can C+P them here and we might be able to help

If everything's working correctly, rhythmbox should be kept up to date by Ubuntu itself - I assume you're applying updates when you're prompted to. However, if you did want to uninstall it, you could do that through the software center.

Hope this helps,
