ubuntu load

My Ubuntu 8,4 started to behave weird a week ago. When i start my session it loads Open Office and Firefox at the start. I never selected that option at "preferred applications".
Something else: it freezes and i have to hit reboot. Puzzled..!!

When your system freezes it will attempt to restore the desktop and open apps at restart. If you close the programs and shutdown/restart manually, does it still do this?

Yessir, it still behaves the same way. When i'm lucky, like today, it will open both said apps without the subsequent freeze. On a bad day, i'm bound to reboot the animal up to...3 times. Sorry, i'm blushing...
