Try to update software, but SuSE reinstalls old version
It's happened to two different apps now. The version included with SuSE 8.1 isn't very up to date, and SuSE's online update doesn't improve things, so I went to the program's homepage instead, and loaded the newest version's RPMs.
SuSE recognises that I've selected an RPM, and offers me the chance to install it with YaST. So far so good.
But then YaST asks me to insert one or other of the SuSE install CDs, and proceeds to install the version from the CD rather than the one I just downloaded.
So that's why I'm still using Mozilla 1.0.1, and Gimp 1.2. I want to upgrade, but SuSE won't let me.
I'm willing to accept that I'm doing something stupid, but I certainly can't see anything obvious. Can anyone explain what I'm seeing, and how to get around it?
Thanks.
And I guess the follow-on question would also be can anyone tell me how to update SuSE from 8.1 to 8.2 without going through the whole install process again (I really don't want to have to download gigs-worth of CD images, burn them, and go through the whole install process every time there's a new version).
8.1 online update/yast didn't work very well. the easiest way to stay current is to get apt4suse. http://linux01.gwdg.de/apt4rpm/ . basically get two rpms, apt
and apt-devel
install then edit /etc/apt/sources.list delete eveything there and paste in the 8.1 list once thats done at a root prompt type apt-get update, then apt-get install synaptic (it will get the latest version of apt plus synaptic) . now run synaptic as root and update at will. it seems like a lot of work but once installed you'll never want to use anything else. there is an 8.1 to 8.2 upgrade procedure at the apt4suse site as well if you want to go that route.
