system restore from tar - Virtualbox SNAFU after update

Hi guys,
bit of a newbie here.
I setup ubuntu server to run a few networky things ftp server and stuff but virtualbox is always trashing itself im guessing after an update it almost puts me off it completly becuase its everytime without fail.

Anyway
thought id restore the whole thing from a back ive been using with a ubuntu desktop live cd.
The file system appears to be there but its come up with
2.427261 kernel panic- not syncing attempted to kill init!
above this line it looks like trying to mount things like /proc /sys /dev -
im guessing its because i havent created the directories ill boot back in and make them and see what happens.

Does anyone have any advice on the virtual box problem?? its really driving me nuts

Thanks
Dave

Right thats got it,
Im up and running now
PHPvirtualbox is working fine and webmin is up
probably the easiest restore ive done, guess all newbies would fall into the mising directories trap. Its a pain the ubuntu forums are off.

But this still leaves the question of how to stop virtualbox trashing itself?
im runing apache but never used it for anything serious.
