sftp problems

I can ssh into a remote host but I can't sftp into the same host.

The command I am using is

sftp username@x.x.x.x

it prompts me for my password and I type it in and hit return and then I get

connection closed

thats it I can't log in. But I log in just fine using ssh. But I really need to transfer some files.

Thank you in advance for the help.

I figured it out. I had to use -1 to force it to use ssh1 instead of the default ssh2.
