sata HD wont mount

hello
I have just completed a fresh instalation of gentoo and one of my hardrives refuses to mount hear is the problem
It is a sata HD with one partiton called sda1 the filesystem is fat32. I have tried to get it to mount when booting by adding this line to my fstab
Code:
/dev/sda1 /mnt/data	vfat iocharset=utf8,umask=000 0
but when it boots it get this error
Code:
/dev/sda1 already mounted or /mnt/data busy
and i also get the same error when i use
Code:
sudo mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/data
now i have created the the directory /mnt/data and i have tried mounting it in diffrent locations to the same effect. i am almost certian that my kernel is set up right to read sata drives beacuse i used this guide
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HARDWARE_SATA
although i never got any output when i used "lspci -v | grep -i sata" . This HD mounts fine on my ubunbu instalation using the same fstab line. Also when i boot i get this error although im not sure if it is relavent
Code:
Activating EVMS ..
DosSegMgr: Warning: Using an alternate geometry (Cylinders, Heads, Sectors) for
The kernel reported drive geometery is : C= 65535 H= 16 S= 63
The partition records report a geometery of : C=65535 H=255 S=63
Using the alternate geometry reported by the partition records.
I could use some help with this one thanks

it may seem obvious but you can elminate some of the question by doing "cat /etc/mtab" when it gives you that message.

did you compile the kernel yourself?

ok it turns out that only the partitions on the HD with gentoo installed will mount i connected an old 6Gb IDE ext3 HD up and it works fine on ubuntu but gentoo gives the same error
