Samsung Syncmaster 732NW widescreen in linux Mandriva 7 and even 8.1

I replaced a Sony 17" CRT monitor by a Samsung SyncMaster 732NW widescreen LCD monitor.

My computer runs Windows XP and Mandriva Linux 2007 Kernel 2.6.17-5 in
dual boot via lilo(ok, I know, grub is better)
As expected Windows XP searches the internet found and installed the
correct drivers and the new monitor was OK.

As expected too, linux had troubles.
The boot started and the first KDE graphical screen with a gauge is showed ok. Suddenly appear a rectangle with the message

Not optimum mode
Recommended mode:
1440 X 90 60 HZ
(a little rectangle with a ?(without)

Some seconds later the screen became black with only the rectangle above
running as screensaver and the only command that linux recognize was
shutdown via power key.
After 8 or 23 trials I can change, via mandriva control system, the
monitor resolution to 1440X990 and click OK before screen became black.
Linux tell me that I must reboot. I do this.
In the next boot, the first graphical screen was showed and suddenly the
execution resumes in text mode asking for login:
-bash-23 1 1 $

I logged with my user and then I remember that for startx command I must
be logged as super user. I typed the su command and gave the password.
After this I typed the startx command as root.
I received a text mode screen full of messages and the error messages below:

Using vt7
(EE) via(0): Given depth(15) is not supported by this driver
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration
Fatal server error:
no screens found
XIO: fatal IO error 104(Connection reset by peer) on X server ";0.0"
after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining

(In this moments I have envy of the windows users, I confess)

- Is there a solution for the trouble described above?

- I'm thinking about install Mandriva 2008.1 64 bits. Will I have
surprises? E.g., if I try to install Mandriva 2008.1 it will
recognize and handle Samsung Syncmaster 732NW widescreen monitor?

Greetings from Sao Paulo - Brazil

Is there in Mandriva 7 before saving the option to test the settings before saving ?
DId you do test it ?
About Mandriva 2008 I suggest download the LIVE version see if works although not all the drivers are present in the Live Version.
A other suggestion check on Mandriva website with hardware is supported.

It should. It's working just fine with the new Syncmaster 2253B.
