Question root issue

Team,
I tried to gop from Ubuntu 5.04 to 5.10. I rebooted the pc and it takes me to a command prompt. I then type in "startx" and I get this error.

/usr/bin/startx: line 143/dev/nell permission denied

I then try chmod 777 /dev/nell and I am getting a Authentication failure error.

Please help

You should login as root first. You can do that by typing "su" at the commandline. Or you can try: "sudo -c [command]" to give a command as root.

Could the command prompt realy be a log-in line? Try typing in your log-in name and see if it asks for a password. If it does, give it your word, then try startx.

Come back and tell us if this worked. Good luck.

Smile Root Problem

Well learned alot of things yesterday. I had to call a buddy of mine who knows linux inside and out. I was not in root when I was trying to do everything. DOH! Then when I did get to root it was still giving me issues so my friend walked me threw formating my 5.04 to reinstalling my 5.10. I am able to get into Linux just fine now. Thanks for all your help. I learned alot.

Patrick
