RH 9 pop3: authorization problems

I'm runnng ipop3d and sendmail on my linux box, which gets mail just fine. I can read my mail there and everythings hunky-dory.

When I try to use my mozilla mail on my win2k laptop to get my mail from the linux box I get a login failure.

I can do raw telnet from the laptop to port 110 on the the linux box, and this is what i get.

+OK POP3 butthead.fearandlearning.us v2001.78rh server ready
USER plarpus@anaesthesia.fearandlearning.us
+OK User name accepted, password please
PASS noneofyourbusiness
-ERR Bad login

Other posts have alluded to a pop authorization db or table. One even mentioned something called popauth, but apparently its nowhere to be found on Redhat 9. Can someone give me some specifics about what I need to do under RH9 to get this working right?

scott

C'mon now... I know lots of you have had similar problems.
I know you have. I read about it here.
How'd you fix it??

At this point I'm suspecting that it might involve pam;
So I added /etc/pam.d/pop3

# cat /etc/pam.d/pop3
#%PAM-1.0
auth required pam_stack.so service=system-auth
account required pam_stack.so service=system-auth

I restarted xinetd, since ipop3d runs under that, but no change.

c'mon somebody help me out here...

Well. I figured out myself, ...finally.

I assumed that the authorization would handle user names of the form
'user@[subdomain.]domain.domainExtension'
...but it doesn't.

I'm not sure what controls that. Is it PAM?

Does anybody know? Does anybody care?
