Unhappy no Simultaneous sounds xmms/gaim and also NUMLOCK issues AHh!!

Hi,

I have a dual boot system WinblowsXP Pro / FC3
3.06Ghz P4
1024MB RAM
800Mhz FSB
hda1 40Gig
hdb1 120Gig
sda1 250Gig

Ive searched numerous posts on several forums about not playing simultaneous sounds, and havnt found a single working solution specific to my issue.

while xmms is open, even if paused, i cannot hear gaim sounds, when xmms goes to next track, gaim steals the sound, and then when xmms is ready to play again it gives me an error:

please be sure that:
sound card working
etc..

it can also be said that i have no idea what im doing, gimme wimblows and i can do anything, but linux is new to me, ive been using it for a week or less.

also, i use the number pad quite frequently and i dont know how to set the numlock key to be on by default.

to any potential answerers please note that giving me vauge advice and vague commands wont help me at all, dont rely on me knowing a thing, arrr

Thanks a bunch
-Alex

To explain the previous response a little better, it appears that your soundcard does not have/support hardware mixing. Dmix is a software mixer that mixes input from multiple programs and outputs it to your soundcard. It works well for me. You will then choose alsa as your audio output for programs. I set mine up with help from this site:
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_ALSA_sound_mixer_aka_dmix

As far as your numlock, get the program numlockx and put the line 'numlockx on' in your X startup scripts. Mine's in .xinitrc. Good luck!
