How to listen to mp3's with xmms, while getting gkrellm alert and gaim sounds?

on my system i use gkrellmms to listen to music nearly all the time. however, this seems to stop any other sounds from being played. sounds i would like to be able to hear while playing music are my new mail notifications and battery alerts (both from gkrellm), gaim sounds and the download warnings from d4x etc.

what is the best app to use to play these alert sounds (normal wave files generally)?

i dunno what d4x uses to play it's alerts but i have set gkrellm to use xmms in the meantime. i have checked around and i know i need a sounds server - i have esd on my system already.

other than that i need help

i need big help. i am using vector and i have posted on their forum about this, thing is, from looking at posts here and the limited response i got there i don't think anyone actually knows! if i was using kde or gnome i seems this kind of thing is set up at install but it isn't with vector.

here's the deal:

i used fluxbox as my window manager. esd is installed on my system but i can't find out how it works.

for starters i am trying to play a sound with play and music with xmms simultaneously

does esd have to be run at startup to be used automatically by apps?

should the esddsp command work regardless of if esd was run at startup?

so, if i do

esddsp play song.wav
esddsp xmms

and play a song in the GUI that should work whatever right?

the esd documenation is non-existent!

totally crap response to this thread then?!

here is what i have achieved:

as i said, i am using Vector 4.0 with fluxbox 0.9.8 and GKrellM2 with GKrellMMS

i wanted to still hear the GKrellM alerts for mail etc while using GKrellMMS, gaim, xchat etc

to do this:

(edit: step 1 not actually necessary - step 2 and 3 is enough to make it work)

1. vector comes with esd. run esd using

esd -nobeeps &

in ~/.xinitrc (starts with x - BIT DODGY)

or in your /etc/rc.d/rc.local (starts at startup - BETTER i think)

2. set the xmms output plugin to ESounD - set GKrellMMS XMMS executable to

xmms

3. use the command

esdplay myalert.wav

to play your GKrellM alerts

that's it.
