mysql installation command not working?


below are two of the command i tried on the terminal bu still not successfully unzip the mysql file i had downloaded.

Can I know what is the problem please? Anyone can help me? Thanks......

[eugene@localhost eugene]$ tar -xzf mysql-max-4.0.21-pc-linux-i686.tar.gz
tar (child): mysql-max-4.0.21-pc-linux-i686.tar.gz: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar (child): Error is not recoverable: exiting now
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

[eugene@localhost eugene]$ # tar -xzf mysql-max-4.0.21-pc-linux-i686.tar.gz
[eugene@localhost eugene]$

try 'ls' before 'tar -xzf <file>'


--are you sure you're working in the right directory?--

Thanks, it is very weird the file name cause end with "??" but doesnt exist while in the folder.

[eugene@localhost eugene]$ cd Software
[eugene@localhost Software]$ ls
divx4linux-std-20030428.tar.gz mysql-max-4.0.21-pc-linux-i686.tar.gz??
Guide.sxw unrar-2.71.tar.gz
[eugene@localhost Software]$ tar -xzf mysql-max-4.0.21-pc-linux-i686.tar.gz??
[eugene@localhost Software]$ ls
divx4linux-std-20030428.tar.gz mysql-max-4.0.21-pc-linux-i686.tar.gz??
Guide.sxw unrar-2.71.tar.gz
mysql-max-4.0.21-pc-linux-i686
[eugene@localhost Software]$

FYI-

special characters can be accessed by putting a '\' in front of them.

I also prefer to hit <tab> while typing filenames. if the console beeps, it means there are
multiple matches, and you can hit <tab> again to see the list, otherwise it will auto-finish
typing the filename for you.
