I am trying to install MySQl mysql-max-4.0.20-pc-linux-i686.tar.gz on a computer running Fedora Core I (Pentium 300mhz, 182 mb RAM).
I am following the instructions from
www.mysql.com as follows:
------------------------------------------
shell> groupadd mysql
shell> useradd -g mysql mysql
shell> gunzip < mysql-VERSION.tar.gz | tar -xvf -
shell> cd mysql-VERSION
shell> ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/mysql
shell> make
shell> make install
shell> cp support-files/my-medium.cnf /etc/my.cnf
shell> cd /usr/local/mysql
shell> bin/mysql_install_db --user=mysql
shell> chown -R root .
shell> chown -R mysql var
shell> chgrp -R mysql .
shell> bin/mysqld_safe --user=mysql &
-------------------------------------------------------
When I get to line 5 (shell> ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/mysql) the command starts and I get the following output:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[root@struik mysql-max-4.0.20-pc-linux-i686]# ./configure --prefix =/usr/local/mysql
NOTE: This is a MySQL binary distribution. It's ready to run, you don't
need to configure it!
To help you a bit, I am now going to create the needed MySQL databases
and start the MySQL server for you. If you run into any trouble, please
consult the MySQL manual, that you can find in the Docs directory.
Installing all prepared tables
040520 14:07:33 ./bin/mysqld: Shutdown Complete
To start mysqld at boot time you have to copy support-files/mysql.server
to the right place for your system
PLEASE REMEMBER TO SET A PASSWORD FOR THE MySQL root USER !
To do so, start the server, then issue the following commands:
./bin/mysqladmin -u root password 'new-password'
./bin/mysqladmin -u root -h struik password 'new-password'
See the manual for more instructions.
NOTE: If you are upgrading from a MySQL <= 3.22.10 you should run
the ./bin/mysql_fix_privilege_tables. Otherwise you will not be
able to use the new GRANT command!
You can start the MySQL daemon with:
cd . ; ./bin/mysqld_safe &
You can test the MySQL daemon with the benchmarks in the 'sql-bench' directory:
cd sql-bench ; perl run-all-tests
Please report any problems with the ./bin/mysqlbug script!

Starting the mysqld server. You can test that it is up and running
with the command:
./bin/mysqladmin version
[root@struik mysql-max-4.0.20-pc-linux-i686]# Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /mysql-max-4.0.20-pc-linux-i686/data
040520 14:07:34 mysqld ended
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At this point the install just stops and I get no more output. I have tried teh next command (make) and that fails too with this error:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[root@struik mysql-max-4.0.20-pc-linux-i686]# make
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So my question is, where am I giong wrong in step 5? Or do I have to just wait longer for that step to finish (more than an hour?)
