Make command not regonised

I have just installed Mandrake 2006 and have run into a whole host of problems.

Th install was fine but I am haveing seriuos trouble trying to configure the system. My current problem is that my console doesnt seem to recognise the make command. I figured that it must not be installed so I have now got the MAKE util file but I can not install it. How do I go about this?
