Lubuntu 18.04 UI freezing

I've just installed Lubuntu 18.04 on an HP Microserver Gen 8, running off a micro-SD card. The installation went fine, and I managed to install a VNC server (I want to run it headless, controlled via VNC from a Windows 10 workstation).
While it booted fine first time, now every time I reboot the UI freezes - doesn't respond to keyboard or mouse. I can access it via VNC, but the console session is completely inaccessible to me.
Any ideas for how I can diagnose/resolve this?

Please read this, then provide more information, such as the amount of RAM you have, the UI you are using, and the like. The more information you provide, the easier it will be for others to help you.

Sorry - here are more details...
  • 18.04.3 Bionic Beaver LTS (LXDE)
  • 4GB RAM
  • UI - I'm guessing that this is LXDE? - I used the default supplied with lubuntu-18.04.3-desktop-amd64.iso

The machine is an HP Proliant Microserver Gen8 G1610T 819185-421

I used the following to install the VNC server from https://linuxconfig.org/vnc-server-o...beaver-linux):

Code:
$ sudo apt install vnc4server xfce4 xfce4-goodies
$ vncpasswd
$ mkdir ~/.vnc
I put this in ~/.vnc/xstartup:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
startxfce4 &
Then made the file executable:
Code:
chmod +x ~/.vnc/xstartup
..and started the server using:
Code:
$ vnc4server
I'm not sure whether any of the VNC stuff is relevant, as it's the console that I'm having a problem with, but that's the only thing that I have installed.
