KDE 3.5.1: Check CPU performance in SYSTEM tray

MEPIS 3.4.3 KDE 3.5.1 Kernel 2.6.15-1
Hardware: HP COmpagq nw8240 Pentium Centrino 2.13GHz 2G RAM 1G SWAP

Firstly, I wondering if such an application exists. GNOME has a couple that sit in your tray and tell you what the current CPU usage is. I kbow of command line "top" but would like to place in the system tray.

Second Q: on my laptop, the fan is constantly on. This is not the case when I am in Win XP. Also I had Ubuntu on this machine, and fan was perfectly quiet. Ihave done these maneouvres:

1. Upgraded BIOS (Before MEPIS installation)
2. added ACPI apps, kpowersave, klaptop, etc.
3. Chnaged the ACPI config to allow: enable CPU throttling, enable performance profiles, enable suspend. I have my CPU throttling set at 25%, but it just sems to be on and noisy.

$ top

says I am using 2-3% of CPU, and the app with the most CPU usage is xorg (v 6.9 I think??)

Any suggestions will be appreciated.
regards,
Smiley

Hi,

You could always use superkaramba and use some of the desklets to display your CPU/MEM use.
http://netdragon.sourceforge.net/ssuperkaramba.html

To your second Q. You could always switch to apm instead of ACPI. I did that myself, because acpi caused me alot of problems.

If you want to stick to acpi, here is a good guide:

Thanks I will give it a try. APM did not work at all. I have posted on MEPIS forums as well, and it seems to be a genral problem with most hardware (AMD-64 in partiular)

Will let you know what I come up with.
