Hi all,
I have an old pentium 4 pc with ubuntu 6.10 installed. As i would like to install other software,i try to download but there are softwares that say only for i586 and that my system is not compatible. For your information,my board is an intel D845GBV and the only ubuntu compatible with the board is version 6.10 but every time i try to install some softwares,Error appear.

I am hoping to get some details or step by step help as I am new to ubuntu

Can you list some of the errors. it should still install. Just because it says i586 means it will not install on a p4. It just means that it is optimized for a 586 cpu

You are getting those errors because edgy does not exsists. If you look here you will see what distributions are valid. http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/. If you are using Edgy then you might want to look at doing a distribution upgrade to at least hardy or intrepid. However I would go with 9.04 jaunty which has some improvements in my opinion.

As much as i like to upgrade to Hardy or Intrepid,I am unable to do so as there is no support for the motherboard that I have.I have tried install 7.10 and upgrade to 8.04 but the whole pc hang. And I have to revert back to 6.10.

Sometimes Ubuntu upgrades are problematic. Hardy should work fine if you do a fresh install. I'm running Hardy on an old P4-2Ghz Intel w/1GB memory. Also have Hardy on an even older P2-400mHz, 384MB memory white box PC.

Just wondering how much memory does your PC have.

My system have 3 HDD,1 CDRW Drive,768 of RAM.Is 8.10 the Hardy version you mention as I have the LiveCD and tried to install but then my system hang after the installation. And when I install 8.10,I can't really see the whole screen as the resolution stuck at 800x600 as I cannot get it to go to 1024x768.

Thanks for your help.

Instead of resurrecting a old post (3 years old) that really isn't relevant to your problem(s) you should in the future create a new thread with your problem. That way the search for relative information won't be broken. Plus you could have completed your thread as [Solved] via the thread tools.
