a. what is the program
b. what distribution of linux are you using

You should provide more details about your issue:
1. which linux distribution is running on your system?
2. is it 32 or 64-bit?
3. do you have an installation DVD for your linux?
4. what program do you want to install?
5. have you already downloaded it somewhere?

To add to what others have asked, I think another good thing to do, would be to read the instructions that came with the program you downloaded. It would be almost unheard of for a program to be released without SOME sort of installation notes/README file, or other instructions on how to build and run it.
